About to build your dream home - or wanting to update your current kitchen? Here's your guide to what's hot - and what's not - in Aussie kitchens

The kitchen is the hub of the home. It's a place where people congregate - to make a cup of coffee, to prepare a delicious meal, to reheat leftovers or even to do homework.

We expect a lot from it. Ideally, the kitchen should have:

  • Generous amount of bench space
  • Plenty of storage
  • Practical layout
  • Efficient appliances
  • Large pantry
  • Natural light

On top of all this, it should look attractive whilst being impervious to water damage.

In real life, unfortunately, we often have to make do with the kitchen we've been given. But there are ways to improve a kitchen that isn't functional.

A functional but dated kitchen can be given a facelift by putting in new benchtops, upgrading the appliances, or installing smart new tapware.

Relocating appliances and plumbing may open up a more practical floor plan that makes the most of the space. While it's a big investment, it gives you the opportunity to create a beautiful and practical kitchen.

A functional but dated kitchen can be given a facelift by putting in new benchtops, upgrading the appliances, or installing smart new tapware. These fixes are much quicker and easier than installing a brand new kitchen.

But, if you are keen to upgrade, here's what's hot and what's not in kitchens right now:

HOT

  • Kitchens that are concealed behind doors are bang on trend. When the kitchen is in use, the doors are open; when it's not, they're closed. Goodbye messy kitchen!
  • Matte black kitchens with sleek, modern lines. If black isn't your thing, consider colours that are found in nature such as muted greens or blues. Add in some timber elements to visually warm up the space.
  • A large kitchen island with a sink and dishwasher. Once upon a time, this was a plumbing nightmare if things went wrong, but no more! No dig plumbing repair means any maintenance issues can be easily rectified.
  • Butler's pantries provide much-needed storage and keep clutter hidden from view. No one likes having their dirty dishes on display for all to see!
  • Leather drawer pulls and cabinet handles are a stylish addition to any kitchen.

NOT

  • Stark, gloss all-white kitchens are out. They look cold and are hard to keep clean.
  • Being environmentally unfriendly. Never put food scraps like coffee grounds down the sink or garbage disposal. Instead, put food scraps in the compost bin and recycle waste to protect the environment.
  • Stainless steel countertops have fallen out of favour as they're high maintenance. Fingerprints and scratch marks dull the surface, plus they're noisy when pots and pans slide on the metal
  • Brass faucets, tapware and cupboard handles are on the way out. Choose matte black or silver instead.
  • Using patterned tiles as a backsplash.

Whatever decisions you make, chances are you'll be living with your choices for a long time, so choose items that you love.
