We took 101 Australian Web Directories and subjected them to 37 different tests to determine how well they are performing. This report outlines what we did, and who are the best in the Aussie market. It should help you identify which ones (listed or not) are worth the time and effort to deal with :)

What's a Web Directory?

Web Directories are places online where website owners can list their business details, and get those all-important business "citations" the search engines want. They may also provide a range of extra services, so you can get additional useful links back to your website. They might also send a small amount of traffic to your website.

They were extremely popular in the pre-search engine days as THE method of finding other websites on the Internet. Essentially a directory was/is a list of linked websites organized in a hierarchy or interconnected list of categories.

With advances in search technology, directories realised the need to present more useful information than just a name, short description and a link to remain relevant to a modern audience :)

Some, however, haven't risen to that challenge as this report reveals!

Google warns businesses about using "low-quality directory or bookmark site links". Unfortunately, they don't really provide any examples of WHO these sites are.

As a result, some people are afraid to use the services of the many GOOD directory services that are available. Or they waste a lot of time (theirs and ours) by requesting link removal and/or disavowing GOOD links they should really keep!

Hopefully, this report gives you a better idea of what a "low-quality" site looks like :) and provide you with direction on what to look for when choosing to list with ANY directory.

What The Search Engines Don't Tell You

Apart from NOT telling you who the "bad apples" are...

... What the search engines also fail to tell you about the GOOD directories is that the search engines rely on them to validate the citations a business has on the Internet!

When they check and find common, repeated information across many "reputable" sources, then they know their data is accurate!

Search engines also "visit" good directories regularly as they are a great source of "fresh links" for the search engine to crawl to add new sites and files to their index!

And even if those directories only send a drizzle of traffic to your website - as most of the players in the game do - these visitors are still a lead! Someone new found you :) Then... it's over to you and the ability of your website to convert that lead!

As you can see, a "good" directory STILL serves a very valuable purpose on the Internet, and you should ensure that your online marketing plan includes listings with them :)

In the Australian marketplace, there are literally hundreds of general, state-based, city-based, and niche directory websites!

So how do you know which directory to use?

What "features" do you look for to determine "good" from "bad".

Well, there are so many of them, that we could not possibly include all of them in just one report. Our initial report focusses only on the "general" directories.

The list was arranged by grabbing names from either the SERPs or from other lists previously compiled. This initial report is on the first 100 or so that we could get through :)

In future upgrades to this report, we'll include some of the better ones that were missed this time around.

So...
Who Are The Best Players?

So who are the best players in the General Directories available in the Aussie marketplace?

Well...

Before we dive in and tell you who was the best (or worst) in this first "Class of 2017 Report", you need to understand the methodology used to assess each directory.

And we'll also look at how well the industry is performing on each of the criteria assessed.

SECTION ONE - METHODOLOGY

There were thirty-seven criteria looked at with each web site. Each one was given a mark out of ten. I don't want to debate whether one should be worth more than another... it's irrelevant when all are assessed in the same way :)

Some initial "scale" was needed and may be adjusted in future reports if warranted.

The total marks earned determined their position in our final list.

The actual marks awarded for each directory can be viewed by requesting the full report (below).

In some tests, we were not able to determine a result, so they are NOT included in the totals below. This explains why some marks will not add up to 100%.

Part 1 - 1st Impressions - 100 points available

Cost to Play:

This is an important factor with some people, although as you will see, ONLY using the free directories could come with a cost of it's own :)

Considering the search engines are turning over a good income, I see no reason why there is the "expectation" that directories be totally free. It's just another form of advertising that business has to pay. And someone has to pay the server costs and wages of directory staff :)

Scoring - Is the directory free to list in? (10pts)

If there is a cost, is it reasonable (under $20, once only or pa, 0 points),

a bit more expensive (<$100 once only, -10pts),

or over the top (>$100, -20pts)?

The average score for this section was 3.56/10

My recommended min score on this is 0, where a small once only cost or free to play is a reasonable expectation.

Patriotic:

We're Aussies, so 10 "bonus" points were available for if we could easily confirm the website as being "true blue" Aussie. If not, 0 points.

The average score for this section was 4.06 /10

My recommended min score on this is 10. Aussies "should" know their country better than anyone from O/S and should be able to set up a more workable structure as a result! :)

I'm all for transparency on the web, so if we could easily identify the owner they get 10 points.

If the website provided no details about ownership, 0 points, and

If they are hidden behind a private WHOIS record, -10 points.

Google Display:

What did the big "G" think of the site? Enough to give it an extended display on the SERPs when we searched for it? 10 points if it did :) (and this test will probably be deprecated next time around)

My recommended min score on this is 0, as the result shown all depends on Google's mood on the day LOL

Next, we looked at the search results on each site.

The key phrase we were looking for was "Web design Sydney" or "Web designer Sydney", depending on which gave results.

Search Form:

You wouldn't think it would be hard to use a search form. But some sites made it so. If it was easy to use, they got 10 points.

However... If it kept "suggesting" stuff, forcing you into picking pre-determined categories or locations etc... they got a lot less, depending on how annoying it got :) Or no points if no search option was available.

The average score for this section was 7.01 /10

My recommended min score on this is 8 as search should be simples!

Search Results:

Simple scoring here... for each 10 reasonably accurate, useful results returned, a site earned 1 point. Return more than 100 useful results... they got the full 10 points.

The average score for this section was a very disappointing 3.98 /10

My recommended min score on this is 8. If they can't provide a good number of useful results, why are they even playing in this game?

SERPs:

This was my subjective opinion on how well their actual search results pages were presented by each directory. Such things as how the data was laid out, graphics used, link placement for clickability, cluttering of adverts etc. Several scored the full 10 points available. Quite a few failed miserably LOL

The average score for this section was 6.63 /10

My recommended min score on this is 8 as these pages should be useful to directory visitors and easy to browse through.

Listing Pages:

Again, another subjective view of the page the business / website listing was on, and how well it was laid out. The number of adverts jammed around the data in lots of cases would be very disappointing for some visitors. Top mark available was 10 points.

The pure "directory" sites which link to the businesses only from their SERPs, would score 0 on this as they don't provide this extra "page".

The average score for this section was also disappointing at 5.5 /10

My recommended min score on this is 8. Listing Pages should be useful to both site visitors and the businesses listed.

Site Support:

This was fun - NOT! A site earned 3 points for a Contact Form, another 3 if they supplied an email link, and another 4 if the postal address and/or phone number were supplied.

Some I have had a "testing" time with sending emails and phoning to fix issues with my listing. If that happened, they got bonus negative points for their lack of support in resolving my problem!

The average score for this section was 4.97 /10

My recommended min score on this is 6. Provide multiple methods for people to get help, not just a contact form!

Site "Usability":

Again, another subjective (sorry) look at the overall site, and how frustrating (or not) it might have been to use it. I wasn't kind to a lot of them, mainly because they didn't deserve more than 2 or 3 for a whole swag of reasons!

The best score handed out? There are a few eights... so I left room for improvement next time they are reviewed ;)

The average score for this section was 3.95 /10

My recommended min score on this would be 6 or more. Make life easy for website visitors, or they won't come back!

Part 2 - Citation Essentials - 70 Points Available

Linkeage:

This is an important one! Three components were looked at here for 30 points.

Was the link to the business website a Direct Link (10 pts), or run through some sort of redirect and/or no follow (5 pts), or was there NO link at all (0 pts).

My recommended min score on this is 10. I can't see ANY reason to bother with the no-follow if it's a DIRECTORY??? And these damn redirects through counter scripts... just so there can be a stats section on how many click throughs they got???

Was there even a question about the website URL? If yes, and it was displayed on the listing page (or SERPs) then 10 points. If not (and believe it or not, some didn't ask) they scored zero on this!
The average score for this section was 7.82 /10
My recommended min score on this is 10. It's a "no brainer"!

Social Links:
And NO - I am NOT talking about social "sharing" buttons here... Rather, links to the BUSINESSES social pages of Facebook, Twitter etc.
So, were these included and linked to? 10 points if they were, or nothing if they weren't. Some even had a no-follow on these, but were still given the full score for being clever and asking for the additional info as a useful service for visitors :)

My recommended min score on this is 0. A useful extra, easy to include, nice to have, but probably not essential?

You would think that NAP + Map should be a no-brainer for an easy 40 points!

But, you would be horribly mistaken!

Part 3 - The Listing Page Itself - 90 Points Available

Business Description:

10 points if a user can add lots of info, 5 if they only allowed a couple of lines.

The average score for this section was 7.33 /10

My recommended min score on this is 10. Businesses listing should be provided with enough space to go crazy! Most won't, but some will :) The more info available on these pages, the more chance there is of impressing both the search engines AND site visitors!

Business Hours:

Some directories had an "Hours of Business" section, so they got 10 points for going to the trouble of coding it, even if it could have included in the extended description :)

The average score for this section was 3.12 /10

My recommended min score on this is 0. Not necessary for all businesses, and a pain in the backside to fill out the form. If offered, find a simple way to collect and display the info. And don't show anything for those who don't complete it :)

Images:

Did they provide an option to UPLOAD images/logos etc, or perhaps allow HTML code in the description so you include your own? 5 points for ANY image shown with a listing. 10 points for 2 or more allowed.

The average score for this section was 3.86 /10

My recommended min score on this is 5. Businesses should have at least ONE opportunity to add some visual element to their listing. The more the merrier, and if done right makes the site visually more appealing for everyone.

Video:

Did they have an option to include a video on your listing page to give the visitor a better first impression, and keep them there a little longer?

The average score for this section was 1.53 /10

My recommended min score on this is 10. Provide the option. It's a useful tactic to keep visitors on the directory longer and make a listing more useful/interesting ;)

Ratings / Reviews:

On most of the sites that offered this feature, there were no ratings or reviews for 99.9% of the listings I viewed. However, since some people regard these as useful, you got 10 points if you provided it.

The average score for this section was 4.65 /10

My recommended min score on this is 5. Personally, I don't like them, but I am a sceptical dinosaur :) I just didn't see many sites "doing" them properly. Hundreds of grey stars littering the landscape look like no-one visits the directory or leaves reviews ;) Done properly though, it's another useful tactic to keep people on the site longer, or provide reasons for them to return!

Special Features:

Well, this section should have been worth 30+ points all by itself with some of the sites visited! I was blown away on a couple with some of the "extras" offered with a basic listing, so they all scored their 10 points! Most sites, however, scored nothing!

Such things as free classifieds, articles, blog posts, "page builders", job vacancies, etc etc etc! Do take the time to check out what some people offer :)

The average score for this section was 2.18 /10

My recommended min score on this is 10. It's an easy way to differentiate a directory from the "competition" especially if they charge a fee.

There were 20 points available here, as I looked at

The RANGE of categories available to choose from (10 = a wide range -> 0 = limited cats available).
The average score for this section was 5.18 /10
My recommended min score on this is 6, which would be a good selection of cats covering most fields. If a user has to ask which one will I fit in, when they can't find their "normal" spot... there aren't enough.

My recommended min score on this is 10. If possible, there should be at least 2 categories for people to list in. Most will only use 1, but some will welcome more.

Updatability:

Keeping business listings updated with current information is vital. This is a measure of how "easy" I thought it was for a listing to be updated.

Essentially, if I could NOT see any login method or any instruction on the site on how to update, they got nothing. If there was a login link, they scored 5 points. If I could actually "get in" to the listing and play with it, there were an extra 5 points to allocate.

Some sites also had a public update link which allowed "anyone" to correct the information. I didn't like that, so three were rewarded with a negative 10 score!

The average score for this section was 4.5 /10

My recommended min score on this is 5. Some form of authenticated "login" should be provided to allow people to update details themselves! It can still be moderated by reviewing update notices after the fact.

Part 4 - Tech Features - 110 Points Available

Secure Server Certificate:
This was worth 10 points if they were using one, or 0 if they weren't. While there might not be much point with a directory running one (except maybe on the listing submit pages), Google might shortly apply some sort of "penalty" to sites which aren't "secure".
Apparently, the consumer is still confused about sites which don't offer certificates, and think they are not "trustworthy", even if/when they aren't actually filling in any forms :)
In fact, a recent message from the Google Search Console advises that sites which contain unsecure forms - i.e. simple search forms - will be marked as UNSAFE in their Chrome browser from October 2017 onwards.

So, thank goodness my cPanel comes with a free one (which I will get around to implementing on ALL my sites when I get the %^$^%&$ chance!)

My recommended min score on this is now 10. Another case of "What Google wants, ye shall provide" :) even though it is mostly not really needed.

Not so much mobile first (not going there LOL) but whether the site layout was responsive to different width browser windows. Worth 10 points if it was.

Here I was looking to see whether the URL was full of variable names and values (something search engines are not fond of) or whether they/were/SEO/friendly/ :) Ten points available if they were.

THIS is one of the things Google keeps on raving about! Each home page was run through the scanner @ GTmetrix with the test server in Sydney, to get their PageSpeed Score (rounded up to /10)
The average score for this section was 7.57 /10
My recommended min score on this is 8. A PageSpeed Score of 80 is easily achievable if you follow recommendations.

Time taken to load, total page size, and the total number of requests were assessed as well. Each of these was converted to a score out of 10.
For load time, full marks were awarded if they were under the magic 3 seconds Google wants (LOL), 5 points for under 10 seconds, and 0 if they went over that!

My recommended min score on this is 5. Google wants you under 3 seconds, but 5 will do for most except the real impatient people ;)

My recommended min score in this section is 78/110, which should be achievable with a little effort.

The average score OVERALL was 53.44%, or 198/370. 52 sites scored above that mark.

My recommended minimum score overall would be around 70.8%, 268/370 or Rank #13 or higher. Anything lower, the site needs attention in some way or another :)

There are other things that could have been given a mark and might be assessed in the future. These could include:

A rating for a good URL STRUCTURE re local, town, city etc pages
A score which would reflect whether the directory was true to its aims of checking Australian/Niche/City etc only websites.
A "SPAM" score demonstrating how well the directory MODERATED the submissions received.
A rating for keeping the directory FRESH by removing OUT OF DATE listings :)
And maybe even a BONUS points for any nice "surprises" encountered along the way e.g. the public thanks from showmelocal.com for listing, or discovering a decent autoresponder sequence etc :)
Could possibly look at the NAP details and compare them to the contact details ON the business website, and maybe check for consistency?

So there you have it...

SECTION TWO - SUMMARY

As a directory owner/operator myself, doing this research I learnt an incredible amount about how this market is working in 2017!

I was really surprised at some of the gaps in the "service" that some people provide, especially with some of those who charge a LOT.

And some of the extras available for next to nothing, literally blew me away!

I was, however, extremely disappointed in some of the websites reviewed, who seemed to be lost under all the virtual tumbleweeds rolling through their websites!

Quite a few of the directories in the "middle" range of results, really need to up their game somewhat :)

Despite my better than reasonable score for Come On Aussie, I can still see where I have lots of room to improve! So there are a few things on my "to-do" list now, dammit LOL

I hope other website owners and directory owners who view this report also get some useful ideas from it too.

"Worthy Mentions"

Two overseas sites jumped out at me with their performance! They are:

Ranked #18 : The personalised "thank you" via Facebook AND Twitter I received from ShowMeLocal.com was indeed an unexpected pleasure! One to watch :)

Ranked #22 : Australia Brownbook business directory. Scored very well for their customizable business profile! Would have scored a lot more if the server scan worked on their website :)

To all the sites who scored above 70... well done to you! Check the complete list below for all the positions and scores.

Could Do Better

More than half of the websites reviewed "could do a lot better"! Especially those who are asking fairly big dollars for the pleasure of doing business with them!

Oh Dear...

I found examples of those websites that Google warns us about LOL. There's a few on this list you should be worried about if your business was listed with them.
