We source a large amount of firewood from the northern NSW coastal region through the NSW forestry commission.
This wood was once left behind after the timber industry picked the longer straighter logs which are used in many industries, including the building industry.
However, now it is being used as a great source of energy to heat your home.
It comprises NSW coastal hardwood varieties such as Blackbutt, Stringy Bark, Spotted Gum and Flooded Gum.
This is what we burn mainly in our own home and it produces a high amount of heat and little ash, making it a good value firewood.
The types of wood – Blackbutt, Stringybark, Spotted gum, and Flooded gum – are all hardwood varieties native to the NSW coastal region.
These species are known for their density and durability, which translate into excellent fuel properties for heating purposes. When used as firewood, these hardwoods burn hotter and longer than softer varieties, producing a high amount of heat. This makes them particularly suited for use in home heating systems during colder months.
Also, these hardwoods are characterised by their low ash production when burned. This is a significant advantage for homeowners, as it means less frequent cleaning of fireplaces or wood-burning stoves and reduced waste. The low ash content also indicates more complete combustion of the wood, which is a measure of efficiency and environmental friendliness, as it results in fewer pollutants being released into the atmosphere.
