May/June to November is the best time to see the Humpback Whales in their annual 10,000km migration from Antartica to Tropical North Queensland.
And some of the best spots to see the 5th largest animal on the planet, are along the NSW and Queensland coastlines.
As many as 7,000 of the 15,000 migrating whales actually have a pitstop in the calm waters of Hervey Bay. It's known as "whale watching capital of the world".
But these majestic creatures also travel not that far offshore along most of the coast of NSW, and along the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.
I've spent many days just soaking up the sunshine on the balconies of various Gold Coast surf clubs at Kingsliff, Rainbow Beach and Tugan.
In such places, you might be lucky enough to see them just 100m-200m offshore.
And if you visit one of the major viewing spots such as Point Danger at Coolangatta, you'll practically get a bird's eye view of the migrating fleet!
Point Danger is one spot where they swim very, very close to the coastline!
I'm not sure if they've spotted Migaloo yet this season. One of my friends claimed she saw this famous white humpback last year and she was over the moon :)

All along the coastline in NSW, there are some prime vantage points for whale watching.
Many moons ago when I was living down the South Coast of NSW, I can remember watching them near Kiama and also down near Bateman's Bay. Special stuff :)
NSW National Parks have put together this terrific resource with facts about whales. And they can help you find the best vantage points to view the annual migration.
But it's not just in NSW and QLD... watching whales on their annual migration is also a thriving business all along the coast in Western Australia too :)
So wherever you want to take a cruise out to see the whales, then all I can suggest is just do it!
I'm sure you'll have a "whale of a time"!
