Ethical Equitation is an independent, self-funded and not-for-profit website that promotes continuous improvement in our interactions with horses and with each other in sharing a common passion. It seeks to achieve this by being a platform for dissemination of academic and other informed debate about ethical equitation - topics that are both well documented and some that are less-discussed.
My journey with horses has taken me from dressage to horsemanship and back again with greater wisdom. Along the way it has highlighted two enduring equine-related issues that I believe need vigorous advocacy:
awareness-raising about the ethics of some training practices in horse/human interactions; and
the need to bridge the prejudice gap that exists between English and Western riding.
In order to equip myself to better understand these issues at a more scholarly level, I enrolled in a Masters of Animal Science (Equine Science) course at Charles Sturt University. This gave me the idea I could create a website to play a role in this advocacy by sharing relevant knowledge and encouraging further debate.
